During the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity will adopt a post-2020 global biodiversity framework as a stepping stone towards the 2050 Vision of "Living in harmony with nature".

The 2018 African Ministerial Declaration on Biodiversity notes with concern the significant impact of land and ecosystem degradation on biological diversity, land productivity and human well-being in Africa, affecting over 485 million people and leading to an estimated annual cost of US$ 9.3 billion and recalls the decision Assembly/AU/Dec.352(XVI) of the Assembly of the African Union which, inter alia, called for the inclusion of biodiversity among the priorities of the African Union and recognizes the critical importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services in supporting economic growth, sustainable development, livelihoods and human well-being in Africa and its contribution to achieving the African Union Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals.

The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 is a cornerstone of the European Green Deal that will put Europe’s biodiversity on the path to recovery by 2030, for the benefit of people, climate and the planet. It will also prepare the EU to take a leading role in the upcoming international negotiations on a new global framework to halt biodiversity loss. With the Green Deal’s ‘do no significant harm’ vision, all EU policies will become more biodiversity-friendly, focusing more on the sustainable use of ecosystems, supporting the recovery in a post-pandemic world[1]. This policy vision is fully supported in the Strategic Plan of Horizon Europe for 2021-2024 in its first key strategic orientation ‘Protecting and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity and managing sustainably natural resources on land and at sea, and achieving climate neutrality and adaptation’. Consequently, Destination 1 “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services” intends to achieve i.a. that" Biodiversity research is interconnected across Europe, supporting and enhancing the ambition of national, EU and international environmental policies and conventions."

Which are the research and innovation joint priorities for both regions? What institutions and  research capacities are requiered to foster collaboration on Biodiversity for SDG´s? What are the main opportunities and challenges at national level? How to foster EU-Africabiodiversity R&I collaboration further?

UNESCO, 2019 "Co-designing science in Africa: first steps in asessing the sustainability science approach from the ground" mapped 5 African case studies research and innovation capacities and main  challenges and opportunities to co-produce the knowledge required for SDG´s. https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000368900.locale=en
