Working as a single powerful system, it is a valuable new tool for a variety of stakeholders from scientist and engineers to industry, policy makers and society in general. The objective is looking for multiple ocean variables of high-quality and high-resolution data to study and continuously monitor complex processes interactions among the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere, as well as to test, validate and demonstrate new marine technologies. In particular in the Mediterranean Sea, it is important to include observations and knowledge of the entire North African margin, to understand the dynamic processes and ocean circulation that affect the entire Mediterranean basin.
Issues of environmental concern such as sea level rise, ocean warming and acidification are valuable indicators for perceiving continuous global change. In addition, pollution by anthropogenic activities, the proliferation of toxic algae and the harmful contamination of millions of tons of plastic waste in the sea, marine acoustic noise are important challenges within the marine environment. EMSO ERIC aims to monitor different oceanic variables that allow a better understanding and dissemination of these environmental processes in all the seas surrounding Europe, with special significance in the Mediterranean basin. EMSO ERIC, provides a series of services for the knowledge and information of the oceans that include science, technological development, data management, communication, education, innovation and industry of the highest quality, which provides valuable social benefits promoting innovative jobs, and technological development supporting the blue economy for sustainable growth
