Mr. Alemiye Mamo is astronomer and science communicator by profession who works as a researcher and regional partnership lead executive at the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) in Ethiopia. He has been actively involved in developing astronomy and space science in Ethiopia for more than twenty years, and is considered one of the key individuals who laid the foundation for these fields in the country. He played a vital role in establishing the Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS) and was a contributor to the establishment and upgrade of Entoto Observatory to the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI) and then to SSGI.
Mr. Alemiye is passionate about promoting astronomy to the public, with a focus on how it can support development in Ethiopia and beyond. He works as the coordinator of the East Africa Regional Office of Astronomy for Development (EA-ROAD) and is the National Outreach Coordinator (NOC) and National Astronomy Education member of Ethiopia for the International Astronomical Union (IAU). He also serves AfAS on the executive committee.
Currently, Mr Alemiye is focusing on promoting dark sky and Astro-tourism initiatives in Africa, recognizing the continent's untapped potential for economic development and scientific contributions in this field. He advocates for the development of African dark sky and Astro-tourism policies and strategies to maximize the benefits of these initiatives.
